此時，在世界眾多優秀兒童圖畫書中，我們特別鍾愛岩村和朗的「十四隻老鼠」系列，並非因為它曾贏過比賽大獎，而是因為作者在這套書中流露出極豐富的自然觀察、家族生活體驗。這份自然之美與家族親情之愛交融無間的作品，使我們愛不忍釋，深覺它是最適合給現代兒童看的圖畫書。

作者岩村和朗，一九三九年生於東京。他在東京藝術大學畢業後，一度曾任職美術設計及電視卡通節目。然後，他全心全意投入了圖畫書的創作。最有意義的，是他厭倦東京都市生活，毅然帶領家人到郊外，自己選地、蓋家屋、尋水源，克服種種生活困難，過「回歸自然」的生活。從這經歷，我們可以充分瞭解岩村和朗創作「十四隻老鼠」靈感來源了。

「十四隻老鼠」以家族三代老鼠大家庭為主角，系列圖畫書包括：
「大搬家」──家族尋找美好環境、合力蓋家屋。
「吃早餐」──家族一起在大自然裡尋找食物。
「挖山芋」──在秋天裡尋找足以過冬的糧食。
